Utica Community Schools high school students will be able to step up to the plate to earn college credits before graduation, courtesy of a collaborative arrangement between the district, the United Shore Professional Baseball League and Macomb Community College.

The district was presented $10,000 worth of tuition credits at Macomb Community College for high school students this year by Andy Appleby, league founder and president and chief executive officer of Rochester, Michigan-based General Sports and Entertainment.

The scholarship credits were presented at the January 23, 2017 Board of Education meeting.

“This scholarship demonstrates how ongoing community partnerships in Utica Community Schools are directly benefiting our students,” Superintendent Dr. Christine Johns said.  “This donation supports our district’s College Culture and will open doors for students so they have the opportunity to pursue their college dreams.”

The League’s donation was made possible through a unique arrangement between the United Shore Professional Baseball League and Macomb Community College.

Appleby said the scholarship supports the high community standards that has been integral to the League’s success since it began in May 2016.

“We have been in a unique position to see this community in action for nearly a year,” Appleby said. “We have seen the district’s high standards in the students we employ and the care and concern for youth in the families that fill our seats every game. We could not have picked a better school community to start our League’s journey.”

This scholarship follows other partnerships established by USPBL and UCS.

Over the past year, the league has announced $11,000 worth of previous scholarships for UCS students. This includes two, $5,000 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) based scholarships by league business partner - Altair. These scholarship opportunities are now available to 2017 graduates through the Superintendent’s Scholarship Program at http://www.uticak12.org/superintendentscholarship.

Other partnerships include an elementary reading incentive, student-designed bat and helmet racks at Jimmy John’s Field, upgrades to softball and baseball fields at Eppler Junior High School and a sold out Back to School celebration in August.
