Thirteen Utica Community Schools have been honored for going green, including one being selected as the Macomb County’s best.

Schools were honored by the Macomb County Board of Commissioners on April 17.

Schools must participate in up to 20 listed environmental and energy savings activities to receive recognition.

The Green School effort is being led by students across Utica Community Schools. Across the district, "green" activities are in place that include such things as recycling paper, creating a birdhouse habitat, using five percent less energy at the school, or establishing a Michigan Garden Project with native plants.

Schools that implement 10 of the 20 projects are awarded the Green School status. A school that takes the extra steps and participates in 15 of the activities can apply to be designated an Emerald School. Schools reapply for the designation each year. A school completing 20 of the listed activities can apply to be designated as a Michigan Evergreen School.

This year, Eisenhower High School earned the most points and tied for the spot of top-earning school, with projects that included going recycling, performing water tests in the Clinton River, adopting animals through the World Wildlife Federation or donating to environmental organizations.

"It's important for younger generations to get involved with helping the environment early so they can continue making a difference even as adults and spread their knowledge to others," said Victoria Cummins, President of Eisenhower Environmental Club.

Advisor for the 22 member club is environmental sciences teacher Brygida DeRiemaker
