Utica Community Schools has expanded a tool offered to families and students that helps to create a clear path for postsecondary success.

Utica Community Schools was among the first Michigan public school districts to offer the career and college planning tool Naviance for parents of 9-12 graders.

This year, the district is expanding the resource to include both junior high and senior high parents and students.

“This expanded service will provide our staff and families more resources to prepare students for their successful future,” Superintendent Dr. Christine Johns said. “It is another unique tool our families and schools have to ensure students have a competitive advantage to pursue their post-secondary options.”

The system provides students with a variety of features, including college research and matching tools, course planning, career and goal assessments, and surveys to help connect what they are doing in school to what they would like to do once they graduate.

Naviance creates personalized resources related to the students’ unique career goals, college interests and academic coursework.

In addition, an on-line tool called Family Connection provides families with access for the first time to the same resources, tools and other collaborative activities that are supporting their students’ college and career-readiness activities.

Other highlights of the system include:

  • An integration system that assists families with activities related to post-secondary goals, such as completing the Common Application, submitting a FAFSA application, or even writing a resume.

    ·       Prep tests that prepare students for college admissions exams, such as the ACT or SAT.

  • Tools to provide assistance for funding college, such as targeted scholarship opportunities.

    ·       Access to videos, links and other on-line media resources that relate directly to the student’s interests and goals.

Naviance supports an important part of the Utica Community Schools mission “that every student will pursue some type of post-high scool education endeavor.”

A recent Georgetown University study illustrated the importance of pursuing post-secondary education.  The 2016 study found that out of 1.6 million new jobs created in the United States following the recession, 95 percent required some level of college education.
