12 more students honored through National Merit

meritTwelve additional Utica Community Schools students have been honored in the prestigious National Merit Scholarship Competition.

The UCS students, representing each high school, have been named among 34,000 National Merit Commended Scholars.

More than 1.5 million students of the Class of 2012entered the National Merit Program by taking the 2010 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.  Commended students are honored for their exceptional academic promise. 

National Merit Commended students are:

  • Andrew Martz and Elliot Person, of Eisenhower High School
  • Askhdeep Dhaliwal and Jason Pevitt, of Henry Ford II High School
  • Joshua Gaha and Jeremy Marineau, of Stevenson High School
  • Nicholas Simpoulos, of Utica High School
  • David Cai, John Kruse, Jordan Mevorach, Grant Ogden and William Qing of the Utica Academy for International Studies

In total, 20 UCS students have been honored by the National Merit Corporation. Earlier this month, eight students were named merit semi-finalists.

The UCS merit semi-finalists scored among the top 16,000 students, or one percent of students taking the exam.

Merit semi-finalists are:

  • John Beauvais, Brigit Edwards and Eric Riedel, of Stevenson High School
  • Joshua Barthel, of the Utica Academy for International Studies
  • Connie Gao and David Smellie, of Utica High School
  • and Sanders Aspelund and Jeffrey Carr, of Eisenhower High School.
