UCS student artists honored through competitive tri-county art program

Student work Two Utica Community Schools student artists were honored in a competitive show sponsored by Wayne State University.

Lauren Pietryga, of the Utica Academy for International Studies and Ryan Shaner, of Henry Ford II High School, had works selected for the Wayne State Tri-County Exhibition.

The annual Wayne State Tri-County Exhibition features 50 works from a pool of more than 800 applicants by high school students from Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties.

Pietryga won first place for her work “Woman In Progress” with a $4000 scholarship in addition to a $1000 scholarship award for selection. Her teacher - Joy Khan - was the sole recipient of the Teacher’s Award, which was accompanied by a stipend for art supplies for her classroom.

Shaner was honored for his work “Cry Baby.” His photography teacher is Dr. Lisa Grunewald.

Selected art works were displayed at Wayne State University through April 5.
