Two former UCS students punctuated a lovely dinner ceremony where thirty-seven graduating seniors were presented with academic scholarships from Superintendent of Schools Dr. Christine Johns and Foundation Vice President Sherman Abdo on Thursday, April 11 during the UCS Foundation for Educational Excellence scholarship dinner celebration at the Palazzo Grande in Shelby Township.

Angel Stallings a current Central Michigan University student, along with Shawn Spezia, a current University of Detroit-Mercy graduate student, both former Superintendent Scholars, spoke about their journey from high school to college and the importance of giving back to others as well as the community.

The ceremony’s presentations began with three community scholarships; the Brett Klenow Scholarship and two Stefan’s Hope scholarships. The Superintendent Scholarships, awarded over the past eleven years and totaling over $650,000, support the student recipient’s post-secondary success, and were awarded to 34 seniors during the ceremony.

Capping off the evening, a new award, the Momentum Award, was introduced and designed to showcase trends within the current Superintendent Scholarship group and recognize the future-forward scholars who represent those traits.  This year seven young women from within the inspiring Superintendent’s Scholarship group stood out through their strength and compassion, graciousness and an altruistic spirit.  The Momentum Award, was a surprise and presented this year to the seven young women Leaders with a Purpose.
