The Board of Education is composed of seven district residents who represent the community at-large. They are elected to staggered, six-year terms by voters in the school district. If a vacancy occurs between annual elections, the remaining trustees appoint a new member to serve until the next election.
At its annual organizational meeting, the Board elects officers for the year from among its members and confirms the trustees' subcommittee assignments.

The Board of Education meets regularly on the third Monday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Joan C. Sergent Instructional Resource Center, 14201 Canal Road, Sterling Heights.

With proper public notice, special meetings may be conducted as needed. Most special meetings are held at the John C. Sergent Instruction Resource Center, 14201 Canal Road, Sterling Heights. Periodically, the Board of Education will hold its meeting in a school to highlight delivery of the instructional programs. Advance notice of the change in location is given.
