CTE Medical Science I

This course of study is designed to introduce students to careers in the medical and healthcare fields. Students will have the opportunity to learn the anatomy and physiology of the body systems as they relate to health, wellness, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and the human life cycle. Students will explore the five service areas of healthcare: informational technology, diagnostic, therapeutic and environmental services, and biotechnology. This course will provide students with basic skills in first aid, CPR, and medical terminology. The class includes medical career research, clinical labs, project work, and professional guest speakers. Students are encouraged to join HOSA-Future Health Professionals club as an adjunct to this course.

CTE Medical Science II

Prerequisite: CTE Medical Science I

This course builds on the knowledge gained in Medical Science I and is designed for students who wish to pursue a career in medical, dental, pharmaceutical, as well as other post-secondary careers in medicine. The course is designed to provide the student with comprehensive administrative and clinical skills in the outpatient medical setting. The course covers knowledge, skills, attitudes, and principles necessary to prepare students to become successful, multi-skilled entry-level medical employees. This course includes clinical skills and procedures, basic pharmacy, diagnostic lab procedures, suturing, EKG, BLS CPR and First Aid and medical terminology. Students apply their knowledge of advanced skills and techniques through analysis and problem solving of patient case studies. Students are also encouraged to participate in HOSA-Future Health Professionals and School-to-Work as adjuncts to the course.

CTE Nursing Assistant

Prerequisite - CTE Medical Science I

Shared Time: May require travel to another building

Nursing Assistant is a co-educational class designed to teach students the basics of patient care for those in hospitals, nursing centers and home care settings. The textbooks and lab practice incorporate the use of employability skills, ethics, medical terminology, BLS CPR and First Aid and medical mathematics to connections with the medical field. Students will participate in hands on labs for all aspects of patient care. Students in the course can test for a credential as a Patient Care Technician upon successful completion of this course. Students will have the opportunity to enhance their experience by participating in job shadowing, Future Nurses Club, and HOSA-Future Health Professionals. Students are encouraged to participate in School-to-Work as an adjunct to this course. This class is suitable for students considering a career in any medical field.

CTE Sports Medicine

Prerequisite - CTE Medical Science I

This course provides high school students with a general overview of athletic training, sports medicine, personal training and its history. This course is intended to help students gain an understanding of the field of sports medicine, various associated disciplines and the role they play in the physically active community. Students who enroll in this course must have Medical Science I as a prerequisite. Upon completion, students will have the opportunity to earn certification as a CPT (Certified Personal Trainer).

STW Medical Intern

PREREQUISITE: School to Work Coordinator approval, and completed or co-enrolled CTE MEDICAL SCIENCE I

This course offers students the opportunity to spend a portion of their school day working at a healthcare-related training site in the community. This employment experience is related to the career goals of the student and is supervised by a school-to-work coordinator. The student will develop workplace skills and leadership traits in their chosen healthcare field, i.e. hospital, medical office, dental office, nursing home, or physical therapy facility. Evaluation of job performance and assessment of coursework is the responsibility of the STW Coordinator with input from the training site supervisor. This program adheres to all federal and state labor laws.
