Teacher of the Year photoA Utica Community Schools high school special education teacher has been honored for driving success in his classroom.

Mike Satawa, a teacher at Eisenhower High School, has been named the overall UCS Teacher of the Year for 2021.

In recognition of his selection as Teacher of the Year, Satawa is receiving a free, two-year lease on the vehicle of his choice from Suburban Ford of Sterling Heights, part of the Suburban Collection.

“All teachers try to do the same thing – we all treat kids the way we expect our kids to be treated,” Satawa said shortly after being surprised with the announcement from Interim Superintendent Robert Monroe and Suburban Ford Manager Jim Elder II.

“Mr. Satawa has a tireless commitment to every student in his care,” Monroe said. “He exemplifies the excellence, leadership and service that is embodied in the culture of Utica Community Schools.”

Satawa, who has been with the district since 2000, works hard so his students have the tools they need to be successful both academically and emotionally. He works closely with Eisenhower teachers to drive academic achievement for his students and partners with families to provide consistency and understanding of student expectations.

He also serves as the school’s Work Study Coordinator to provide students real world experiences and previously served Eisenhower as the girls’ basketball coach, during which time he led them to MAC White Championships and was twice named coach of the year.

As part of the Teacher of the Year honor, Satawa will have the opportunity to choose among eligible vehicles from The Suburban Collection dealerships in his community. This year marks the 8th anniversary of The Suburban Collection’s partnership in the Teacher of the Year program with Utica Community Schools.

“The teachers in our communities give so much of themselves to ensure their students – our children – can succeed and reach their full potential,” said David Fischer, Jr., president and CEO of The Suburban Collection. “We feel so fortunate we can help recognize and show our gratitude to these extraordinary individuals who leave a lasting impact on the lives of their students.”

UCS teaches are regularly honored for their leadership and commitment to their students.

UCS elementary teacher of the year Dawn Nacker, of Plumbrook Elementary  and Junior High School teacher of the year Paula LaSala, of the UCS Virtual Academy and Jeannette Junior High School, were also honored this year as recipients of Macomb County Teachers of the Year honors.
