Utica Community Schools winter sports teams wrapped up their seasons earlier this year with much success. This was especially true for the following teams who received All-State Academic honors:

Eisenhower High School
Boys Varsity Basketball
“This award is important because it shows that our players value the importance of their education. They are well rounded kids and have great drive and determination, in sports and in the classroom,” head coach, Thomas Antishin said.

“I have always felt that if your players are good in the classroom, they will be good on the athletic playing field. What truly separates this team from others is they are genuine and they truly care about others and giving back to the community,” said head coach, Joseph Matthew.

“I am always proud of the teams’ academic accomplishments. I particularly appreciate the fact that their academic accomplishments are recognized at the state level, as all too often recognition is purely based on what goes into the scorebook,” said head coach, Mike Barnes.

This accomplishment means a lot to me as a coach because it showed that these young men truly understand the importance of being a student-athlete through being dedicated both in the classroom and on the court, which makes me extremely proud of each of them. The hard-work and dedication that these young men have exemplified is something that I know that they will apply throughout every chapter of their lives," head coach, David Hinkle, said.

“I believe the reason for such classroom success from this group is because they compete in all they do and always strive to excel. Watching their commitment to the team, the game of basketball and their school work was a pleasure throughout the season,” head coach, Thomas McDonald, said.

As coaches, we stress that our athletes are students first and try to teach the importance of time management. With the difficult and grueling schedule that Competitive Cheerleaders keep, this team has exemplified the true meaning of Student Athlete. I am proud to have a team that works so hard in the classroom, and I believe that makes them even stronger in our sport.
