A video commercial about the dangers of distracted driving has earned a Utica Community Schools senior national recognition and a college scholarship.

JT Simms, who attends Henry Ford II High School and the Center for Science and Industry, received a $2,000 scholarship from the Detroit Auto Dealers Association (DADA) for a short video he created about distracted driving.

“Through the creativity and skills that have been nurtured in UCS classrooms, JT has created a powerful message that will be shared with younger students,” said Superintendent Dr. Christine Johns.

The video is available at the following link: https://youtu.be/VrCQ7BGsqw8.

Simms plans to attend Macomb Community College this fall in general studies with the goal of transferring to Grand Valley State University.

The 30-second commercial “Easy Magic Trick to Fool Your Friends” equates a magician’s disappearing act to what can happen in a distracted driving accident.

The DADA scholarship is provided through the Courageous Persuaders program, a peer-to-peer program where high school students create 30-second commercials warning middle school students about the dangers of underage drinking and texting while driving.

The contest drew 710 entries from 218 high schools and has involved nearly one thousand students from 38 states across the U.S. and from Ontario. Over 600 middle school students viewed and evaluated the videos as part of the judging process.
