Two Utica Community Schools seniors have been named among the state’s top student journalists.

Henry Ford II High School senior Theresa De Benedetti and Utica High School senior Haley Grooms were selected to the 2020 State Journalism staff by the Michigan Interscholastic Press Association (MIPA).

“Inspired by their UCS teachers, Theresa and Haley represent the commitment of our district to academic excellence,” said Superintendent Dr. Christine Johns. “Their hard work and success demonstrates again how UCS students are recognized for their leadership at state and national levels.”

Selection for the special journalism staff was based on submission of a digital portfolio. The seniors separately submitted letters of recommendation, a resume and a personal essay.

De Benedetti, who plans to study journalism at Wayne State University, has served for three years on the Henry Ford II student newspaper, The Generator.

“My high school journalism experiences have taught me so much about the importance of freedom of speech, preserving print media and the role journalists play in society,” De Benedetti said.

She has served as editor and design editor of the student paper. Her advisor is teacher Alexis Campion.

De Benedetti also serves as an officer for the school’s International Thespian Society chapter and is the marketing director for the Henry Ford II Theatre Department.

Grooms, who will study at journalism at Michigan State University next year, is editor-in-chief of the Arrow Newspaper. She has served as a reporter for The Arrow and as a photographer and copy editor of The Warrior Yearbook. Her advisor is teacher Stacey Smale.

“Journalism has impacted my life so much to the point where I find myself using it in routine actions,” Grooms said. “For instance, I start interviewing people when I think that they have an interesting backstory, or I will take pictures of events going on around me.”

She also is the Head of the Running Crew for the school’s theatre program and serves on the Principal’s Advisory board.
