Focus on early elementary reading and writing continues in UCS

Utica Community Schools is continuing to provide its elementary students support toward creating a strong foundation in literacy.

This school year, the district is increasing the number of literacy consultants at elementary schools to intensify efforts in building student skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening.

“We want our students to develop a life-long love for reading and be effective communicators,” superintendent Dr. Christine Johns said.  “The literacy consultants provide professional assistance and will support all students in developing important literacy skills.”

UCS is focused on ensuring all students are proficient readers by third grade.

The literacy consultants will provide professional development for teachers and support their colleagues in Language Arts strategies. The consultants will also work with students individually and in small groups.

The consultants began the school year with intense professional development activities to ensure a structured integration of essential literacy skills that support the district’s academic mission and vision.

UCS promotes a literacy program for students in five key areas: phonemic awareness, vocabulary, phonics, fluency and comprehension. Students have experiences utilizing print and digital material.
