GLK-UAIS Computer Science class crowned 2026 Bulldog Battle champions

Computer Science students from the Gene L. Klida Utica Academy for International Studies (GLK-UAIS) have been awarded the title of 2026 Bulldog Battle Hackathon champions by Kettering University.

In its second year, the Hackathon is a competitive programming event hosted by Kettering University where students individually select and complete coding challenges using either Python or Java. Each challenge varies in complexity, with point values ranging from 5 to 60 points. As students solve problems, their points contribute to both their individual scores and the overall team average.

“Experiences like this are incredibly valuable because they take learning beyond the classroom. Students are challenged to apply their skills in a real-world, high-pressure environment where problem-solving, persistence, and critical thinking matters,” said Christina Hujdurovic, GLK-UAIS Mathematics and Computer Science teacher.

“It also gives them exposure to college-level expectations and helps them build confidence in their abilities.”

In addition to GLK-UAIS winning the team competition, GLK-UAIS senior Christian Talia earned the top individual score throughout the Hackathon.

“It feels great to win and hopefully have something that can help me get a job sooner, but it wasn't just my effort but also the collective effort of our team that helped me to achieve this,” Talia said.

In total, 13 teams competed in this year’s competition.

“What makes me most proud is the growth I’ve seen in these students. Their hard work, resilience, and commitment to improving their programming skills truly paid off,” Hujdurovic said. “Many of them have spent the past two years developing their skills through IB Computer Science and seeing that progress come to life in a real competition setting is incredibly rewarding.”

Starting the IB Computer Science program five years ago at GLK-UAIS, Hujdurovic shared that she is grateful to be able to provide students with opportunities like this one.

“Watching them challenge themselves, grow their skills, and achieve something meaningful is what makes it all worth it.”
