National math recognition propels GLK-UAIS student’s success

Gene L. Klida Utica Academy for International Studies senior, Luna Alaowad, has a love for math.

During her sophomore year, Alaowad completed the Diploma Program at an accelerated pace with Kumon North America, an international tutoring company. The result was a score well above average that ranked her #1 in Kumon North America for math.

Alaowad took her math skills and put them to work with the organization by working with younger students and eventually supporting learners of all ages and skill levels, ranging from foundational counting to advanced calculus.

“This experience not only strengthened my own mathematical foundation but also developed my ability to adapt to different learning styles,” Alaowad said.

Alaowad’s success at Kumon enabled her to test out of Accelerated Algebra II her freshman year and helped her thrive in rigorous coursework, including IB Math Analysis.

As she looks ahead, Alaowad will put her math skills to work further after graduation as she majors in neuroscience/biology on the pre-med track. She will be selecting her university choice in the coming weeks.
