The person behind "Swinehart" Field

As we prepare for the August 23 dedication for improvements on Swinehart Field, we thought we would share a little background on the legacy of Clifton "Barney" Swinehart. 

Mr. Swinehart joined Utica Community Schools in 1942. "Barney," as he was called, graduated from Ferris State and was hired as a business teacher and coach. He coached football, basketball and baseball. 

In 1956, he was appointed Athletic Director of the school system. 

Coach Swinehart was named to the Michigan High School Coaches Association "Hall of Fame" in 1967. 

Clinton "Barney" Swinehart served in Utica Community Schools for 40 years, including 20 years as the district's Director of Finance. He retired in 1982.

Mr. Swinehart passed away in 2001. 

Utica Community Schools will be hosting a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate improvements to the field that carries Mr. Swinehart's name. The ceremony is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 23. For more information on the celebration, please see this link.
