Future Focus events shows UCS eighth graders their high school future

Eisenhower seniors Daniella Poules and Soreen Shawka remember what it is like to be eighth graders.

“Eigth grade is an exciting time because it is so fun, but they need to make sure they are on top of everything because it is so important,” Poules said.

To help the 8th graders learn about what is ahead of them, Poules and Shawka joined a large team of students, teachers and administrators introducing them to the multiple options they can consider once they enter their high school years.

The Future Focus event is being held to provide students a “one stop shop” to the multiple possibilities open as they move one step closer to graduation.

“We want to help them because they need to use  high school to what they want to do in the future,” Shawka said.

As Michigan’s second largest school district, Utica Community Schools offers unique options not available in other communities for students to follow their passions and interests.

During October, students from each junior high school are visiting the Walsh Community Education Center where stations are set to provide an overview of UCS comprehensive high schools and specialty programs.

Poules Shawka provided an overview of the high school art program as other stations were talking to students on subjects such as counseling, Career and Technical Education, Fine Arts, student council, and athletics.

They also visited short presentations on each of the secondary specialty programs, which will begin the enrollment process in December.

For Shelby Junior High School 8th grader Mason Ramsay, Future Focus was opportunity explore his next education steps.

“I think this is important – it shows us a lot of opportunities on what what we can do when we get to high school,” he said.
