Retired UCS teacher writes first book on the importance of friendship
Kathy Andersen worked in in Utica Community Schools for 20 years within early childhood education. Throughout her time as a teacher, including today as a substitute teacher, Anderson would encounter children struggling with their social skills in the classroom. This served as inspiration for her first children’s book, Besties Alouette and Nora Lou: The Adventures of Summer Vacation.
“Being in education, watching friendships grow, and helping children to develop and value these relationships is very rewarding,” Andersen said. “This book is the first in the series introducing two best friends. The books to follow will continue to show the importance of lasting friendships, support, and always being there for one another in difficult classroom situations.”
Andersen found it challenging to find the courage to write the book. Ultimately, it was a great friend whose support and encouragement convinced her to continue with her dream.
“What brings the most pride from writing this book is both the accomplishment and reaching out to young children to instill self-confidence and acceptance of others,” said Andersen. “A true friendship is an everlasting treasure.”
