No Days Off: Malow Skater Glides Toward Her Dreams

Each day before school, Malow Junior High 9th grader, Brooklynn Twork, goes to Suburban Ice with the Onyx Suburban Skating Academy for an hour and a half of ice time. She returns to the rink after school for another hour, and even practices on the weekends – Twork takes no days off from her passion of figure skating.

“I just like everything about it,” Twork said. “I like the feeling that I can just move my body and really feel the ice. I also love jumping, doing spins, and doing tricks.”

Twork has been skating for 11 years, with her inspiration being figure skaters she would watch during her brother’s hockey practices.

“I knew I wanted to be one of them,” Twork recalled.

Since then, Twork has competed in multiple competitions locally and nationally, including the U.S. Figure Skating Excel series.

“It’s harder than people think,” Twork said. “It’s hard on your body in general because you have to do a lot of training outside of skating. So, I work out, stretch, do conditioning, and run on the treadmill.”

Twork won the Excel U.S. Finals in figure skating and has since begun competing in freestyle and free dance, as well as shadow dance with her sister who also skates.

Her hope from all of her hard work is to continue to grow and gain further recognition within the figure skating community.
