Three Utica Community Schools students have been honored with selections to perform among the top state’s vocal and instrumental groups.

Teo Vujic was selected for the All State High School Band, Ella Siwicki was named to the All-State Jazz Honors Choir, and Madison Schoonfield was selected for the State Honors Choir.

The students are under the direction of choir teacher Julia Holt and band teacher Jonathan Carrothers.

Vujic, of Eisenhower High School, performed with the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association All-State High School Band on January 21 at the Michigan Music Conference.

He was selected after a rigorous audition in October and was one of only seven bassoonists selected for the high school All-State ensembles. The students were conducted by Robert Sheldon, a renowned composer and clinician.

Siwicki, of Eisenhower High School,  was selected to be one of 20 students to perform in the Michigan School Vocal Music Association All-State Jazz Honors Choir. They performed under director and composer April Arabian-Tini and followed jazz choir protocol of singing on individual microphones during their performance. Ella also was chosen to sing an improvised solo during the performance.

Schoonfield, of Malow Junior High School performed on the stage at DeVos Hall in Grand Rapids as part of the Michigan School Vocal Music Association 7-8-9 SSA State Honors Choir under the direction of Dr. Kimberly Dunn Adams from Western Michigan University. More than 900 students auditioned this fall to be a member of one of the three state honors choirs with only 350 selected to participate.
