Stevenson band named top jazz performers at state competition
The StevensonHigh School jazz band hit a high note with statewide judges at a recent statewide competition.
The 22-member band was selected “Outstanding Combo” across all classifications at the 50th annual Central Michigan University Jazz Weekend.
Other honors awarded to Stevenson include:
- The Big Band was chosen as the 2nd Runner Up among 15 Class AA bands
- The Big Band's Saxophone Section was chosen as the 1st Runner Up as the best section
- Senior Jimmy Esho was selected as the 2nd Runner Up as an Outstanding Soloist on his trumpet.
“It was a testament to the hard work of our Stevenson band students to have SHS represented in every award category,” said Michael Sekich, director of bands at Stevenson High School.
It’s been a great winter for the band. In January, the band was invited to perform at the historic Aretha’s Jazz Cafe at Music Hall.
