A Utica Community Schools teacher has been recognized for her exemplary efforts in inspiring her students and fostering enthusiasm for the opportunities that lie ahead following their graduation.

Kelli McCloud, a Stevenson High School teacher, received the 2024 Spark Award from Detroit Regional Dollars for Scholars (DRDFS) – an organization that prepares students for post-high school success by supporting and empowering them with skills, knowledge and resources.

"Kelli embodies the true spirit of the spark award: she recognizes students' potential and encourages them to think big, plan with intention, and reach their goals,” said Christa Funk, Executive Director of Detroit Regional Dollars for Scholars. “She leads with compassion and a strong belief that students can achieve anything they put their minds to."

Not only did the organization speak highly of McCloud, but but the students she has influenced provided glowing feedback, sharing:

• “Mrs. McCloud is such a supporting and open person that will help you no matter what. I appreciate how far she’s willing to go for someone.”
• “I appreciate how intentional and involved Mrs. McCloud is with us.”
• “Mrs. McCloud is the best thing to happen to me; she’s seriously incredible.”
• “Ms. McCloud has non-stop been one of the best supporters for my education! She constantly builds me up and has guided me. I am so thankful to have her as my adviser.”

McCloud, who has been the Stevenson program adviser for 11 years, said the organization provides with students workshops at college campuses, college prep coaches, guidance and counseling on life skills such as financial management and etiquette, gives each graduate $4,000 in scholarship, and continues to support students as they move onto college or additional training.

“This program opens up doors for students that would have never been opened,” she said.

McCloud said she appreciates the recognition from an organization that sees her work with students.

“I love giving to students and have always just focused on them,” she said.  “My desire is and always has been to make sure students feel as though they have a purpose and that they matter.  My passion is making sure my students have a solid plan after graduation which is why I spend so much time on college prep and keeping them connected with people and tools to help them along the way.”

Each year, Detroit Regional Dollars for Scholars awards the Spark Award in honor of Florence Gasdick, one of the organization’s founding members. Gasdick often used the analogy of “igniting” a student’s interest in education “from a spark into a flame” when speaking about inspiring high school students to pursue their post-secondary goals.
