You Are Brave!

Jacob with Switzer friends and bravery boxes

Jacob Efthemiou knows how important it is to be brave when you are a small child facing a big medical procedure.

When he was four, Jacob was in the hospital for a treatment that involved an IV and blood tests.   And then someone at the hospital gave him a small Spiderman toy that made the difference.

“I loved it, and when we got home I asked my mom ‘can I do this, too?’, he said.

It was the start of “Jacob’s Bravery Box,” a collection of small gifts that he annually puts together with the help of his family and friends at Switzer Elementary.  The bags are then donated to Children’s Hospital.

“I want other kids to feel happy after they get it and they will be stronger,” he said. “I saw one boy receive the bag and his face just lit up with joy.”

Jacob creates gift bags to be distributed to patients at Children's Hospital in Michigan, specifically those dealing with procedures that involved needles or IVs.

The boxes are comprised of a stuffed animal, band aids, a book or toy, a business card that provides information to his social media page, and a note that reads: “My name is Jacob; I came here too; because you are brave; here is a gift for you.”

Jacob raises funds through a series of bottle drives and people who contact him through his facebook page.

This is the fourth year he has organized the collection, which is usually dropped off at the hospital around Christmas. He began with 20 boxes and this year dropped off 200 collections for children.

His friends at Switzer joined him in putting the boxes together with his family.
