Courageous kindergarteners

Roberts Elementary School is engaged in Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS) practices with each month highlighting a particular PBIS trait. April’s focus was on courage.
Kindergarten students were invited to host an assembly on the topic and celebrated courage by spelling out the word with signs, reading a book during the assembly to the school, and teaching the school a cheer: “C-O-U-R-A-G-E! I have courage inside of me!”
“My favorite part about the assembly was seeing the students have the courage to read in front of everyone,” kindergarten teacher, Taylor Shaffer said. “Also, watching the students do the cheer and be proud of themselves was really rewarding, too.”
Mina Shim, was among the kindergarten students who shared in reading the book Courage by Bernard Waber and said reading the book made her feel like she had courage.
“Courage means trying new things,” Shim added.
Through their PBIS efforts this year, Roberts Elementary students and staff have celebrated respect, gratitude, empathy, perseverance, honesty, cooperation, in addition to courage.
“I think courage is important, especially for the younger ones,” Shaffer said. “They’re learning a bunch of new things right now, so they need to have courage to accomplish those new endeavors.”
Students in Shaffer’s class have embraced this month’s PBIS theme and share their sense of pride when they try something new, saying, “I just had courage!”
