Multicultural event celebrates community at Plumbrook
Inspired by Plumbrook Elementary School’s March is Reading Month theme, ‘reading around the world,’ Kris Procissi and Jessica Mike helped put together the school’s first ever Multicultural Event.
Mike, an English Language (EL) teacher, and the Plumbrook staff had been talking about hosting a multicultural celebration for a while, so she was thrilled by the 30 families who shared their culture with the community.
“The families were what made this event great – they came out so prepared and eager to share,” said Mike. “It was such a joyful, positive environment.”
Procissi, Plumbrook’s literary coach, shared that families shined because they were able to do what was comfortable for them.
“The students were beaming with pride – almost all of them came dressed in their cultural attire, and it was beautiful to see the pride that the students had in sharing their culture with everyone,” Procissi said.
Third grader, Prabhjot Kaur, celebrated her Punjabi culture by singing and felt the event was important because “you get to learn about other cultures and gain more knowledge.”
According to Procissi and Mike, families have already said they want to participate next year, and they anticipate the level of participation to grow.
