What a difference two years make.

In 2023, senior Rachel Rodriguez was struggling in school and her dream of becoming a teacher was beginning to fade in the face of the growing costs of college.

Now, the Utica Alternative Learning Center is graduating with a Utica Community Schools diploma and a full ride scholarship to Oakland University.

“Everything changed for me when I came to Utica Community Schools and the Utica Alternative Learning Center,” she said. “The staff here is so friendly, and they helped me to realize my goal of earning a diploma and becoming a teacher.”

Teacher Nichole Graham said that Rodriguez “found her voice” at the UALC.

“She set her goal of becoming a teacher and never looked back,” Graham said. “She has the patience and understanding needed to be an incredible teacher. I am so beyond proud of her and her future students are incredibly lucky! She will set a great example for students in showing that it doesn't matter which route they need or have to take, they can still reach their goals.”

A teaching career has been Rodriguez’s dream since she volunteered at her church working with children.

In addition to empowering Rodriguez to earn a diploma, the staff also worked with her on addressing the financial constraints of a college degree. Working with UCS and UALC staff, Rodriquez applied to Oakland University where she not only earned admittance but received a full scholarship.

“I am so excited and happy to be able to realize my dream by attending Oakland University to become a teacher,” she said.
