Puzzling Toward Success
As part of the district’s math curriculum, teachers have introduced a new way for students to learn through a program called ST Math to supplement the district's main math curriculum. The program has been piloted in elementary schools for the past three years, but this school year it has been fully integrated into the curriculum at Jeannette and Bemis junior high schools, as well as in all 25 elementary schools for third through sixth grade classrooms.
“ST Math is my favorite because it’s a fun way to learn,” said Carter James, a sixth-grade student at Collins Elementary School. “It reminds me of a video game, but instead it helps me understand what I am learning in school.”
With ST Math, students complete puzzles as they work through their program, where teachers can also adjust the material for individual students and assign specific puzzles that align with lessons currently being taught in the classroom.
“My students have enjoyed using ST Math. Many times, they even ask if we can make time during the day to play, which is great because it doesn’t feel like an assignment they are required to do,” said Collins Elementary School sixth grade teacher Chandra Thomas. “Another thing I love about the program is that I can add puzzles for students to help them review before a test or quiz.”
Through ST Math, students are not only engaging with math in new and exciting ways, but also building skills that will last far beyond the classroom, like critical thinking, perseverance and problem-solving.
By integrating programs like this into the curriculum, the district continues its legacy of learning while striving for excellence, ensuring every student has the tools they need to succeed today and in the future.
