It’s Electric!

8th grade Shelby Junior High students learned about electric vehicles (EVs), electric generation and natural resources thanks to GM’s rEV program.

Students shared that they enjoyed learning about how EVs worked and that they were surprised to find out that it only took $0.05 and 20 minutes to charge an EV.

“Our current unit of study is on contact forces and energy transfer,” said Shelby science teacher Teresa Kavanaugh. “ Electric vehicles utilize stored kinetic energy to move the car, so it allowed us to bridge that relationship between an electric vehicle and energy transfer among objects.”

The presentation was an interactive experience based off inquiry which led to collaboration with student peers and the presenter.

“It was a different experience than what students are used to in science class, so this presentation allowed them to experience a new way of learning concepts discussed in class,” Kavanaugh said.

“Creating these new experiences helps students see the different forms of science within our world instead of just what's in the classroom.”

Students now have the opportunity to further explore the rEV program to win an Amazon gift card or an e-bike.
