Former UCS students start business law organization

Two Eisenhower graduates recently launched Undergraduate Business Law at Michigan State University.

Lucas Mazurek and Nevaeh Neff paired together to create a place for MSU students who are looking to learn and share their common interests with business law. Undergraduate Business Law, or UBL, exposes members to skills like networking and communication while offering opportunities for professional development. UBL has 40 members including an E-board of seven, where Mazurek and Neff serve as external and internal president respectively.

The process of starting UBL was not easy for them. They spent months trying to develop a plan to get the organization going.

“When starting from scratch, the process looks daunting. Nevaeh and I, alongside our fantastic executive board, met frequently last spring to discuss plans and goals, and how we were going to achieve them,” Mazurek said. “Through collaboration and criticism, we notably developed a marketing strategy, financial strategy, and meeting cycle.”

Neff was a member of the School to Work program while attending Eisenhower.

“School to Work has definitely played a role where I am today. Being a part of the co-op program for 2 years taught me how to balance school and a real job, since I would be leaving school 1 hour early and going to work at Atlas Jewelers,” Neff said.

The program allowed her to gain valuable work skills early on, which have been useful for running UBL.

“That experience helped me develop very good time management skills, professionalism, and managing real world expectations and responsibilities,” Neff said. “When I look back at school to work, those skills I learned have stuck with me and have carried into college and influenced the way I approach leadership and responsibilities.”

Since starting UBL, the pair have been excited with what they have been able to accomplish already.

“Luke and I can both agree that starting UBL has had a huge impact on us in the best way. Leading this organization has made us grow in ways we both never expected,” Neff said. “UBL has also given us a sense of purpose on campus by helping build a community where everyone can feel welcome, supported and motivated. Most importantly, it has shown Luke and I that we have a passion for Business Law and helped shape the direction we want to take in our future careers. “

There is still more growth coming for the organization as Mazurek and Neff look toward the future of UBL.

“For the future, Luke and I want to keep building on everything we've worked hard on creating so far,” Neff said. “Overall, we want UBL to keep growing, connecting students and making a positive impact on both campus and in the communities we are a part of.”
