• What about school pictures and student ID cards?

All students must wear their ID when they are in the building. The barcode on the ID is linked to your child’s lunch account so the ID will be scanned when purchasing items using an account.

Students who missed registration will get their IDs at the beginning of the school year. Students may use their IDs from last year until then (if they have one).

    What are the lunch options?

Students may bring their lunch, get a school lunch, or purchase a la carte items. You can find lunch menus here.

What time can students enter the building?

    • Students may enter the building at 7:30 am through Door 1 (main entrance).
    • Bus riders will enter through Door 7 beginning at 7:50 am.
    • Bus riders may also walk to Door 1 to enter if they arrive prior to 7:50.

What time does school start and end?

Classes begin at 8:00 am and end at 2:51 pm.

Can I bring in items my child forgot?

There is a drop off table located in the vestibule inside door 1. Please encourage your child to check that they have their laptop, charger, ID, writing utensils and any notebooks needed for class before leaving for school.

  • Can I get a message to my child?

Because students will have access to their UCS email on their laptop, please email your child. Encourage your child to check email periodically throughout the day.

How do I report an absence?

Call the attendance line (586) 797-3799 to report an all-day absence or late arrival.  If you have called in a late arrival, your child should stop in the main office to sign in before going to class. Please note the secondary attendance policy in the student handbook.

How do I arrange an early dismissal?

Please request early dismissals in advance as it will minimize classroom disruptions. Call the attendance line before 10:00 am.

Parents must call the main office upon arrival and the office staff will release your child. Students may sign back in on their own if they return to school that day.

Can I request homework for my child?

Since students have access to their assignments in Schoology, work requests are not necessary when your child will be out of school for extended periods of time.

What is the cell phone policy?

Students may bring cell phones to school, however, the  UCS handbook specifies “they cannot be displayed or used without permission from a teacher or administrator for educational purposes.” Here at Shelby phones should only be out and in use before and after school and during lunch, unless a teacher is allowing the use of phones in class for educational activities. Otherwise, phones should be turned off during the school day.

Phones turned into the office for inappropriate use must be picked up by a parent.

    What is the dress code?

The UCS handbook indicates, “Student appearance should not be disruptive to the educational process.” Please see the student handbook for the complete dress code. In general, students should wear clothing that isn’t revealing or restrictive, so students can fully participate in classroom activities.

What if my child gets sick during the school day?

Students who are not feeling well should let the teacher know. We will utilize a staffed health room to isolate sick students. You will be notified to come pick up your child. Call the main office upon arrival and your child will be released to you.
