Spirit of the Phoenix guides GLK-UAIS Class of 2023
The Gene L. Klida Utica Academy for International Studies Class of 2023 has truly embraced the spirit of its mascot.
Commencement speaker Kaitlyn Keusch drew the success of the Pheonix, which burns brightly and rises from its own ashes.
“The lessons that you have learned here, the relationships you have formed, the experiences that you have had, are all in the ashes,” she said. “From these, you will rise again, and become a version of yourself that has not yet been ignited. But if it’s anything like who I see before me, I am certain that it will breathtaking.”
Speaker JD McCreadie compared the graduates’ path to traveling a winding, mountain road.
“We went through countless trials and tribulations to get where we are today, and taking these paths gave us more experience for navigating future paths,” he said. “As we finish coming around the mountain of high school, we get ready to start navigating the even larger mountain of college. Our learning experience does not end as soon as we get our diploma – hundreds, if not thousands of choices will present themselves to us as time goes on. Mountain roads will only get more complex; even now, there are countless paths that present themselves to us as we get closer to college.”
Principal Shaun Greene-Beebe stressed the accomplishments of the class:
- More than 14,850 hours of CAS requirements and extensive research and more have written an 396,000 words for their extended essays.
- A cumulative G.P.A. of 4.22.
- 88 Valedictorians and 2 Salutatorians
“This graduating class has left its mark at UAIS forever,” she said. “They won’t let anything prevent or stop their progress.”
Superintendent Robert Monroe reminded graduates that their experiences both in and out of the classroom will continue to define their future.
“I encourage you to continue chasing and following your interests” he said. “Because as I'm sure you can recognize, for as much as you learned in your studies during your time here, you learned just as much through finding and developing those passions as well.”
Board of Education Vice President Denyeal Nesovski, speaking on behalf of the graduating senior parents, reminded graduates that they will always have strong family roots no matter throughout their future.
“We've given you everything you need to know and now it's time for you to set out on your own,” she said. “Have courage, be kind, and never forget all of the people here in this room that are cheering you on and supporting you. And call .... often!! I speak for every family member in this arena.”
