    Dear UCS Community,

This past weekend, more than 2,000 UCS students officially changed their status from “senior” to “alumni” at the graduation ceremonies held at Oakland University. These graduates have grit, talent and a strong work ethic. They demonstrated excellence in athletics, theater and the arts, school-related worksites and most of all in the classroom.

Our graduates have remarkable stories to tell that we have been sharing with our community. The stories – which we have compiled on our website – share similar themes when the seniors reflect on their UCS experiences. For these students, success in our district is driven from the unique options available to them and the strong relationships they formed in our classrooms.

The UCS legacy of learning is built on strong programs and pathways that encourage students to explore their passions and fulfill their educational needs. This intense focus on student success continues as we welcome the incoming Kindergarten Class of 2038.

The vision and strategy that drives excellence across our district is found in the UCS Empowered Strategic Plan. This roadmap provided a pathway for the facility transformation that occurred over the past two years with our 2023 bond issue.  It identifies future areas of transformation. There are paths focused on safety, the culture of empowerment (i.e., teaching and learning initiatives with a relevant and engaging curriculum), and the culture of caring (i.e., a safe and positive environment for students).

The common thread is that our direction and decision-making are guided by data. Using data, we study our future facility usage. Student data identifies areas for systemic and structural change, providing teachers and staff with the tools needed to drive achievement.

Our parents and community provide important feedback to direct our work.  At a time of rapid change, the amazing Utica Community Schools team works in partnership with families and community members to provide a stable environment that empowers student success.  Working as partners, we had a great school year!

This partnership will be even more critical as we return from summer break to begin the next important steps in our strategic plan. These steps will include further evaluation of our facilities. In addition, we will be focused on strengthening the structure and systems that support our teachers to create success for our students, particularly those with special needs.

If this is your last year as a UCS parent, thank you for your support. We hope you remain involved in our school district.  If you are a returning family, have a safe and relaxing summer.  We will see everyone again for another great school year on August 26th.

    Sincerely,

    Robert S. Monroe
