A vote for character and responsibility

Collins Vote

It was a hard fought campaign, but in the end leading candidates Crispy and Cheese prevailed for Collins Elementary.

Collins students recently learned how to exercise their democratic rights with the naming of two symbols that characterize their commitment to caring and positive behavior.

Following the recent presidential primary, Collins staff held a school-wide election that allowed students to vote on the two names for two “Caring Cubs” that are trophies used to honor classes where students are making all the right decisions.

“Sticking with the spirit of the primary election in Michigan and coinciding with our Character Strong trait of "Responsibility," students at Collins had the chance to exercise their rights as American Citizens and cast their vote to elect names for our two Caring Cubs Trophies,” said principal Meghan Ciacchella.

Polls were open from 8:30-11:50 a.m. and the entire school marked the occasion with Red, White, and Blue spirit day.

“It felt realistic like when I will be able to vote in a few years,” said sixth grader Grayson Schlueter.

The two voting booths saw record of voters as K-6 students and staff cast their votes. Additionally, students earned an "I VOTED" sticker to celebrate their participation in our Democratic process.

Four names were on the ballot - Crispy, Coral, Carl, or Cheese.  After voting, Collins’ new cub trophies will from now on be named Crispy and Cheese.

Collins students were happy with the opportunity to share their vote and the result of the election.

“I liked using the booth and having privacy to vote,” said fourth grader Gregory Wiebelhaus.

Added fifth grader Ben Howes: “I liked that I could share my opinion.”
