Ford II senior's work pays off with full scholarship to Michigan, Michigan State

AntonIt is the ultimate ace in a hole for Henry Ford II high school senior Anton Vulaj.

Vulaj has earned a full ride to either Michigan State University or the University of Michigan through the Chick Evans Scholarship, a nationally recognized program that awards employed golf caddies with a track record of academic excellence.

Vulaj, who plans to become a software engineer, said he learned of the offer when “my mom was waiting at the door” with the acceptance letter.

“It feels a little unreal right now and probably won’t kick in until I commit to a college,” Vulaj said.

This low key reaction is consistent with Vulaj’s personality and his clear focus on the future, according to his AP government  teacher Brian Vento.

“As a former Evans Scholar I know what hard work and sacrifices Anton had to make in order to earn this prestigious scholarship,” Vento said. “This speaks to his personality. Anton is very measured and focused on his present and his future. As I have gotten to know Anton better over the past two years his humor has also begun to shine. You can always count on Anton saying something that makes you laugh. I know that Anton Vulaj will thrive at any university.”

Vulaj began his work as a caddy 8th grader, following in the steps of his brother – 2017 Ford II graduate John Vulaj, who is also an Evans scholarship winner.

In addition to his work as a caddy, Vulaj earned the scholarship based on his academic performance and recommendations from his teachers and employers.

Vulaj said that, ultimately, he plans to work for the automotive industry, a tech company or pursue an additional degree in business.  He said his career choice stems from his interest in math and problem solving.

“It is like an open plane and each line of code has its own sense of purpose,” he said. “It is like having an infinite amount of Legos. There are so many things you can do, and it is up to you on how you want to place them.”

In addition to finishing his career at Henry Ford II, Vulaj is also completing his service project to earn an Eagle Scout status. The project involves removing carpeting and restoring a stairway at Catholic Church of St. Moses The Black, in downtown Detroit.
